Referrals information
Who can refer?
Referrals are accepted from:
- BCHC Health Visitors, School Nurses and Allied Health Professionals
- Hospital Paediatricians and Allied Health Professionals
- GP’s
- Social Care Services
- Education – Community Day Nurseries, Schools, Educational Psychologists, Special Educational Needs Co-ordinators (SENCo’s)
- Forward Thinking Birmingham (CAMHS)
- Voluntary sector – Barnardos, NCH Action for Children and others
Some of our specialist services are restricted to referrals from Doctors only.
Referral Criteria
Coordination or fine motor difficulties
Children whose motor skills (the precise movement of muscles with the intent to perform a specific development delays, or experience difficulty in coordinating movements meaning that they are unable to complete or perform common everyday tasks.
Developmental delay or disordered development
Concerns of a condition where a child is less developed than their peers, both physically or mentally.
Hearing
This is where a child may become hard of hearing, meaning they may require addition support in communicating with others.
Neurological disability
A neurological disability within children is any disorder of the nervous system that can affect the brain, spine and the nerves that connect them.
Sensory impairment
This is where a child will experience difficulty with one of their senses (smell, sight, touch, hearing, smell or spatial awareness). For example, if someone has a hearing impairment, they may be required to wear a hearing aid.
Significant learning difficulties / disabilities
Significant learning difficulties range in severity, and can leave some children with the inability to communicate, while others will struggle to learn new skills or cope independently.
Symptom management in palliative and end of life care
This is the care and management of pain a child will receive at the end of their life.
Visual
Visual problems are those that can affect the sight of a child.

Once a referral has been accepted, you will be contacted regarding an appointment.
Please note that children with potential Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), will now be referred to the Neurodevelopmental Pathway (NDP) Multi-Disciplinary Team. The NDP service will accept referrals for:
Children registered with a Birmingham GP
- 2.5 years to 16 years (ASD)
- 5 years and above (ADHD)
Where there are concerns with:
- Social, communication and emotional functioning (for assessment of Autism Spectrum Disorder [ASD])
- Concentration, hyperactivity and impulse control (for assessment of Attention Deficity Hyperactivity Disorder [ADHD])
