Team

We are a consultant-led service providing specialist care on referral for adults aged 16 and over with a severe disability, medical or mental health condition.

Our team

We have an extensive team that includes Consultants, experienced Senior Dental Officers, Specialty Trainees, Therapists and Nurses holding additional qualifications to support the special care team.

 

Consultants in Special Care Dentistry

 
Dr Rebecca Willis

Short resume of career to date: 

  • Qualified Sheffield 2002
  • Rebecca completed Vocational Training in North Wales and gained her MFDS whilst working as a Senior Dental Officer in Manchester.
  • She worked for a number of years in New Zealand in both Private Practice and for the Hospital Dental Service. 
  • She joined the Community Dental Service in Birmingham in 2010. She completed Specialist Training in 2014 gaining her DSCD and MSCD. She currently works as a Senior Dental Officer in Special Care Dentistry.

Dr Laura Hyland

Consultant in Special Care

 

Short resume of career to date:

  • Qualified Sheffield 2011.
  • Worked in a range of services including general practice, in Acute Hospital setting as Maxillofacial
  • Senior House Officer and in Liverpool Dental Hospital and Community services working within Special Care Dentistry.
  • Following this, Laura commenced Specialist training in Special Care Dentistry in Birmingham and entered the Specialist list in September 2017. Laura works as a Senior Dental Officer for Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.

 

Other positions held:

  • Specialist Advisory Committee trainee representative for two years.
  • Member of British Society of Disability and Oral Health.
  • Main clinical / research and development interests:
  • Main clinical interests are in managing those who are medically compromised and people with learning disabilities. In addition providing sedation and treatment under general anaesthesia.
  • Additional interests are in research; along with teaching, training and education for the dental team in the study of Special Care Dentistry.

 

 

Mrs Jennifer Perry

Short resume of career to date:

  • Qualified Cardiff Dental School, 2000
  • Experienced in providing dental care in a variety of clinical settings, including General Practice, Hospital and Community Dental Services; Jennifer is also experienced in providing multi-disciplinary care to those patients in outreach settings such as secure mental health units and care homes. 
  • Completed Speciality Training in 2018, Jennifer is registered as a Specialist in Special Care Dentistry.
  • Current role is Senior Dental Officer for Birmingham Community Health Care Dental Services providing dental care for patients with complex medical, mental, physical and learning disabilities.

  • British Dental Association Community Dental Services, West Midlands Division

 

Main clinical interests:
A confident leader in provision of dental care under conscious sedation and general anaesthetics, with an additional interest in service improvement for both patients and the dental team.

 

 

Specialists in Special Care Dentistry

Dr Kehinde Fatosin

Kehinde Fatosin

BDS FFDRCSI  

 

Current Post:
Dr Fatosin currently practices in Specialist Special Care Dentistry at Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, providing special care dental services to patients with learning difficulties, dementia and the medically compromised.
He also provides special care dental services and oral surgery to HMP Birmingham. He is a member of the Managed Clinical Network for Special Care Dentistry within the West Midlands and is a trainer and mentor within his specialty.

 

Short resume of career to date:
Dr Fatosin became a Fellow of the Faculty of Dentistry, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in July 1996. He worked as a specialty trainee in oral and maxillofacial surgery in Ireland and England for five years before moving to Dudley in November 2000.
Dr Fatosin (Ken) joined Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust as a Specialist in Special Care Dentistry in 2011 following the dissolution of Dudley Primary Care Trust.

Short resume of career to date:

  • Qualified  from Birmingham Dental Hospital  in 2013 
  • Worked in general dental practice following qualification, Re-joining the trust as a Band 4 Dental Nurse on Prosthodontics and Special Care departments in Birmingham Dental Hospital  2014- 2015
  • Integrated across to  the New Birmingham Dental Hospital, working on the Oral Medicine and Special Care departments as a Band 4 Dental Nurse until 2017.
  • In 2017 joined the Special Care Community Dental Team, as a Senior Dental Nurse is Special Care.
     

Main clinical / research and development interests:
Keen interest in developing pathways and aids for patients receiving treatment, reducing barriers to care- especially with communicational / learning difficulty patients. Continuing to improve and developing the service and treatment offered by the special care team  to our patients and service users.
