BCHC Plus Speech and Language Therapy
The BCHC Plus Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) service supplements the NHS Core SLT service funded by local health commissioners.
BCHC Plus offers a portfolio of additional clinical support and training which schools and other settings can purchase specifically to meet the needs of children and young people with Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN).
The BCHC Plus Speech and Language Therapy Service started formally delivering service level agreements in September 2014. We now deliver speech and language therapy services to over 80 settings across Birmingham, including mainstream schools, nurseries, and specialist provisions. We also offer a range of training packages to support practitioners who work with children and young people with speech, language and communication needs.
It is estimated that 10 per cent of all children have long term SLCN, which may be very specific in nature or may be related to other conditions such as deafness or autism.
In addition, in areas of social disadvantage, upwards of 50% of all children may start school with impoverished language which means they are not school-ready.
Schools and other settings that purchase a BCHC Plus SLT service receive scheduled, dedicated time and support from a named Speech and Language Therapist within their setting. The work carried out is agreed in advance, tailored to the desired outcomes, priorities and needs of each setting and may include interventions at universal, targeted, and specialist levels. Settings may additionally purchase from the menu of staff training on offer from the BCHC Plus SLT service.
