Developing safeguarding confidence and competence

A wide range of information and support to help develop effectiveness, competence and confidence in safeguarding practice was presented to BCHC professionals and partners at our second annual safeguarding conference.
Opened by our chief nurse, Lorraine Galligan, a packed programme included insights into best practice to support victims of domestic abuse and interpersonal violence and a presentation on the issue of stalking by Lorraine Garratley, community services manager at Black Country Women's Aid.
Birmingham councillor David Barker gave an inspiring talk about his experience as a survivor of domestic abuse; and there was a wide range of interactive exhibition stands, presentations and workshops from partners including West Midlands Police, Sikh Women's Aid, Birmingham and Solihull Women's Aid, West Midlands Fire Service, Anawim, Waythrough and Roshni.
Closing remarks were offered by BCHC chief executive Richard Kirby, who said: "The particular focus on domestic abuse and our role in identifying and supporting those at risk is a hugely important subject for all of us and I am glad that the conference has given the subject such clear attention."
