TV Triumph for Ward 6

A man lies in a hospital bed holding a TV remote. There is a TV on wheels next to his bed.

Patients on Ward 6 at Moseley Hall Hospital can now enjoy watching television even if they are unable to visit the day rooms, thanks to charity funded wall-mounted and portable trolley TVs.

Reduced visitation from family and friends combined with the fact that patients were not able to mingle in day rooms during the COVID-19 pandemic meant that patients were struggling with isolation from the outside world. Rehabilitation Assistant Charlotte Wheeler approached the charity with the idea of providing TVs in the bays or individual rooms. “Access to entertainment will allow patients a means of distraction and comfort during their period of care. This is particularly important whilst visitation has been stopped/reduced during the COVID-19 crisis.”

Doris, a patient on the ward, was very grateful for the TV in her room. “The TVs are very good to have”, she says. “It gives me something to do while I’m alone and is so nice to be able to catch up on my programmes”.

Staff have reported that the TVs have improved patient interactions with each other as they can discuss the programmes being watched. Patients have shared that the TVs help ease the pain of being away from loved ones and makes being in hospital a bit more bearable for them as they are able to watch some of their favourite shows. John told the charity that the TV “occupies me while I am here” and “lifts the mood when you’re bored”. Patients also said that being able to watch the TVs helps them feel “more at home”, with another stating that they were happy to have the portable trolley television available when they were alone in their room. Clinical Team Lead Oluremi Amusan said; “The patients have been enjoying the trolley TV, and it is very easy and convenient [for staff] to move around the bays. The TVs have also helped the patients to keep up-to-date with the news and follow the latest news trends.”
