The Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Trust Support to Care Home Training Academy currently offers three distinct programmes from which Birmingham Care Home staff can choose:
 

  • Clinical Skills Core Competency: has been designed to provide Care Homes with a training and competency framework. The training will provide you with the skills to complete general healthcare tasks and supply you with a framework to guide and record your competency. It is a self-contained 3 day training programme that aims to train, help and support healthcare professionals who wish to improve their practice in Birmingham Care Homes.
  • Palliative and End of Life Care Education Programme.
  • Project Echo: Is a video conferencing course for healthcare professionals who wish to improve their practice in Birmingham Care Homes. The course is divided into a series of self-contained, one day training sessions from which you can choose to do any or all.

Clinical Skills Core Competencies

Clinical Skills Core Competenc

 

Clinical Skills Core Competency is a self-contained training programme delivered over 6 weeks to improve clinical practice in Birmingham Care Homes. It is a collaborative approach to healthcare tasks competencies.

 

This programme has been designed to provide Care Homes with a training and competency framework. The training will provide you with the skills to complete general healthcare tasks and supply you with a framework to guide and record your competency.

 

Who is the course aimed at?

This programme has been designed to help non-registered healthcare professionals working in Birmingham’s Care Homes. You can be new to working in a Care Home environment and supporting residents or have experience and are looking for some refresher training.

 

The course is also beneficial for team leaders or care home management to attend as a refresher of skills and to learn more about how to implement or adapt this framework into your Care Home training provision.

 

 

What are the entry requirements?

To register, you must be working within a Birmingham Care Home.

 

 

How long is the course?

3 days.

 

 

What does the course cover?

Day 1 includes:

  • Monitoring the skin.
  • Undertaking Blood Glucose Monitoring.
  • Manage catheter care systems and common trouble shooting.

 

Day 2 includes:

  • Simple skin dressings for skin tears and reapplying dressings in an emergency (first aid).
  • Recognising falls risks and falls prevention.
  • Demonstrate effective infection prevention and control measures.

 

Day 3 includes:

  • Understanding Dementia.
  • Recognising and responding to a patient at the end of life.
  • Oral care. 

 

 

Assessment

Competencies will be signed off upon completion of the course and following demonstration of competency within your own workplace. It is the responsibility of the delegate's Senior/Line Manager to sign off competency within the workplace.

Palliative and EOL Care Education Programme

Project Echo

 

Project Echo is a video conferencing community of practice designed for all healthcare professionals working in Birmingham Care Homes. Providing a safe space for learning and sharing best practice. We bring the specialist to you; all you need is a computer or smart device with internet access to participate

Project Echo offers fourth nightly sessions covering a variety of topics. Every forth night we welcome a guest speaker to share knowledge of the specialist areas.

This programme has been designed to help registered and non-registered healthcare professionals working in Birmingham’s Care Homes. You can be new to working in a Care Home environment and supporting residents or have experience and are looking for some refresher training.

 

The course is also beneficial for team leaders or care home management to attend as a skills refresher.

To register, you must be working within a Birmingham Care Home.

 

 

How long is the course?

Over a six week period

 

 

What does the course cover?

Modules include:

  • Advance care planning
  • Catheter management
  • Dementia care
  • Diabetes management
  • End of life and palliative care
  • Falls prevention/management
  • Hydration and nutrition
  • Identifying a deteriorating resident
  • Mental capacity
  • Staff and resident wellbeing
  • Tissue viability

Assessment
