Specialist, referral-based dental services delivered at Birmingham Dental Hospital and other community locations.

Referral information for professionals

Referring practitioners can use the links below to download documents and view service specifications and information on how to refer patients. 

 

The minimum dataset outlines information your referral should include.

 

The following services are accessed via appointment only following referral from a medical doctor or dental practitioner.

 

For any urgent referrals these will need to be referred via Rego and will be clinically triaged once received.

 

 

Oral Medicine

Oral Medicine is a specialty of dentistry concerned with the oral health care of patients with chronic, recurrent and medically related disorders of the oral and maxillofacial region, and with their diagnosis and principally non-surgical management.

 

Please send all referrals, including referrals for suspected oral cancer, through the electronic referral management system.

 

Referrals from private dental practices, NHS dental practices outside the area, general medical practitioners and other hospitals can be sent using the downloadable routine or Rapid Access Clinic referral proforma, available via the links below. Guidance regarding required referral information is also provided below.

For suspected oral cancer referrals, please use the 2WW referral on REGO or the Oral Medicine Rapid Access Clinic Proforma above.

 

 

Oral Surgery

The Oral Surgery Department provides a consultant-led specialist diagnostic, advisory and secondary care treatment service for referred patients with particular reference to all aspects of outpatient Oral Surgery, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders and facial pain.

 

Please send all Oral Surgery referrals from NHS Dental Practices through the electronic referral management system (Rego).

 

Referrals from the Community Dental Service, Private Dental Practices, NHS Dental Practices outside the area and other hospitals can continue to use the downloadable Oral Surgery referral form:

Orthodontic Dentistry

Orthodontics is concerned with major variants in tooth alignment, tooth positioning and facial skeletal and soft-tissue relationships that have adverse effects on dental health and on dental and facial appearance.

 

 

 

Paediatric Dentistry

Paediatric Dentistry covers all aspects of oral health care for children, who are unique in their stages of development, oral disease, behavioural and oral health needs.

Restorative Dentistry

Restorative Dentistry  ( Including referrals to Periodontolgy , Prosthodontics and Endodontics ).

 

Restorative dentistry is concerned with the diagnosis and integrated effective management of patients with diseases of the oral cavity, the teeth and supporting structures. 

 

 

 

 

Special Care Dentistry

As of May 2023: All referrals from General Dental Practitioners to Special Care Dental are made through the electronic referral management system.

Referrals from the Community Dental Service, Private Dental Practices, NHS Dental Practices outside the area and other hospitals can continue to use the downloadable Special Care Dentistry Referral Form.

 

 

 

Unscheduled Care Service

The unscheduled care service provides a limited dental casualty service for the treatment of certain conditions.  Dental undergraduate students may be allocated to these clinics as part of their dental education. This service can only be accessed via NHS 111.
